Mari Yoshinaga

Percussionist Mari Yoshinaga is a member of arx duo with Garrett Arney, described by composer Alejandro Vinao as “absolutely wonderful, graceful, and powerful … Apart from remarkable individual talents, [arx duo] connects in a very special way.” The duo has performed recitals, coached chamber groups and given lectures and private lessons in Asia, Europe and the United States. They also serve on the faculty of the Young Artist Summer Program at Curtis Summerfest in Philadelphia. Mari’s recent recordings include Partita: Suite for Guitar and Percussion by Paul Lansky with guitarist David Starobin (Bridge Records) and Cloud-Polyphonies by James Wood (NMC Recordings). In April 2017, arx duo will be recording a new work in London, The Harmonic Canon by Dominic Murcott, to be released on the Nonclassical label.

Mari was born in Kagoshima, Japan. Immersed in music from an early age, she began studying piano at age 3, marimba at 5, euphonium at 10, cello at 11 and percussion at 12. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute of Music and a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music. Mari endorses Adams Instruments, Pearl drums and Vic Firth sticks and mallets. She currently resides in Seattle, Washington, with her husband, violinist Noah Geller.
